old plugs, new install requires encryption key.

I’ve had a dozen local bytes plugs for a few years now, which have worked very well. Originally with Tasmota and flashed to esphome. My original home assistant setup became unweildy and on poor hardware so I decided to move to a Rpi and start from scratch.

The new minimal home assistant discovers the plugs as they’re still on my wifi network but when I try to add them, it tells me the following

“Please enter the encryption key for LocalBytesPlug8 (localbytes-plug-pm-8ca211). You can find it in the ESPHome Dashboard or in your ESPHome device YAML configuration.”

However, this is a completely fresh install of Home Assistant so these devices aren’t in the yaml and there’s no encryption key I can see. I’m guessing that when they originally were added to the old Home Assistant that it created this when pairing the switches.

Is the only way to fix this to re-flash the switches with the minimal firmware and then the main firmware? Would flashing with the minimal firmware retain the wifi connection or would that put it back on it’s own wifi connection that I’d have to connect to and set it up as though it was a brand new switch?

Do you still have a back-up of your original HA instance? If you do, you should be able to get the encryption keys from that. If not, I would recommend re-flashing as you described.

I tried to flash one of the plugs today but ran into the ‘firmware too big’ issue, using localbytes-plug-pm.ota.bin.gz

In the past you could use a minimal firmware but that seems to have disappeared from the repository, the only files at https://github.com/LocalBytes/esphome-localbytes-plug/releases are for either OTA flashing or using ESPhome Web. I haven’t set up the latter and the former is too big.

Would anyone know where the minimal binary has gone or have a copy of it by any chance please.

Thanks for letting us know the minimal firmware has vanished - how odd!

I’ve let management know, so will hopefully get it re-uploaded soon.

ok so didn’t quite go to plan. I did the ota update with the minimal firmware, connected to its web server, gave it the details of my house wifi and it updated. I could see it connect to my wifi but when I put its ip address into my browser, it doesn’t connect.

Any ideas on what might be causing the plug to not show a configuration web page so I can load the full firmware?
